open call.

plug is currently seeking new members to join our board of co-directors and co-curators of this long-standing Kansas City artist-run space. We've already accomplished so much this year and are ready to expand our team of artists, creatives, and curators with an eye towards a more powerful and prolific plug!

About plug

plug, formerly known as Plug Projects, is a curatorial collaboration by four Kansas City artists: CJ Charbonneau, Mary Clara Hutchison, Melanie Johnson, and Marco Rosichelli, who share the mission of bringing fresh perspectives and conversation to the local cultural community. Our goal is to engage artists and the public at large by exhibiting challenging new work, initiating critical dialogue, and expanding connections of artists in Kansas City as part of a wider, national network of artists.

Founded with the support of a Rocket Grant in 2011, plug transitioned to a nonprofit organization in 2020 supported by a new Board of Directors. Due to the Covid-19 crisis and its impact on both art spaces and individual plug board members, plug left behind its shotgun-style West Bottom's gallery space in 2020 and operated unattached from a physical location for a year. In 2021, plug partnered with Agnes Arts and moved to a new gallery and programming space at 1328 Agnes Avenue, east of Kansas City's downtown area. Our 2021-2022 programming calendar is under way with exhibitions from local and non-local artists.

As a collaborative artist-focused organization, plug exhibits local and non-local artists in our gallery space directly east of Kansas City’s downtown area. Through exhibitions and additional programming, we cultivate critical conversations and connections between artists. We provide opportunities for artists to expand their practice and take risks, empowering the incubation of new ideas.

New members will join the board in mid-November and begin sharing curatorial, fundraising, and gallery duties. Board membership terms are a minimum of one year, during which time members currently have a financial responsibility to help support gallery operations.

Expected responsibilities include:

  • Program development

  • Exhibition curation and installation

  • Event management

    • Marketing/PR

    • Documentation

  • Grant writing and fundraising

  • Artist communication and contract management

  • Shipping and handling of artwork

  • Facilities management
